Mike and Diane's Fundraiser for Chuck Roberts
4x4 Coed Volleyball Tournament Results
Tournament Date: Saturday, August 12, 2004
FUND RAISER A SUCCESS!
Seventeen teams came out Saturday in support of Chuck Roberts and his family.
Chuck has three sons: Sean age 9, Cameron age 5, and Zachary age 4. The weather
was beautiful and we'd been waiting for a day like this to share with all our
friends on the volleyball courts. Players from as near as Carlisle Road, Troy,
Oneonta, and Dolgeville, came to kick up some sand....some wet, some dry.
There was a huge controversy brewing amongst the spectators as to whose serve
made the most points: God's Sky Ball (Carl Jurica) or Kemmie's Kick Serve
(Aaron Kemmer)? We do believe that Carl's serve brought the most cheers from
the crowd and Aaron's serve brought the most groans and complaints from his
opponents.
Many raffle prizes were offered by Hollie. Winners are as follows:
Maureen Denegar won the portable volleyball net system, Shelley Mareno won the
sport grill. Some of the other raffle winners were Daryl Cook & Claira,
Barry Shannon, Barb Peacock, George Houghton, Jeremy Howland, Melissa Gallagher
and many others. Total raffle sales and food donations came to $520.
A special creative offering was donated by Barry Shannon which allowed everyone
to create their own team t-shirts that day. Some teams chose to design their
shirts with a team name that had "Chuck" in its title. A list of some of the
names that we came up with were: Woodchucks, Chuck U, Dixie Chucks (& Pat),
Up Chucks and many others.
Play was competitive throughout the day, even among those playing reverse coed
for their first time.
Thanks to people who brought a dish to share and snacks, etc. Also thanks to
Hollie McLaughlin for taking care of the raffle sales and Cindy Tries for her
assistance during the day. Thank you to all who helped make this fund raiser a
success. Thank you to all the businesses who donated certificates or
merchandise for our raffle.
Veteran finalists, the "Peacocks" and "Chuckout These Legs" met in the finals
after splitting earlier in the day. Awesome returns by Captain, Phil Peacock,
kept volleys long. Shirts and skirts were flying, hair-raising digs, and sweet
sets had game faces tense. The first game went to Chuckout These Legs, followed
by a great comeback by our four-feathered friends, the Peacocks. The third game
brought the first "sand pancake to Volleyball World." No amount of syrup could
have made that up any sweeter! One more touch brought the ball to a swinging
hitter, and the ball was put away. Beach dig after beach dig, then the salty
middle hitter put the ball in his sweet spot, 29' 6" from center line. How much
more pounding could that multi-seamed ball take? Sometimes only years of
experience can sway the outcome! This time was no exception. Youth was no match
for the multi-faceted game birds, the Peacocks.
With donations still arriving, our efforts have brought in over $4,000 to date.
The top six teams all donated their winnings to Chuck. Our website now accepts
donations through Pay Pal instead of raffle tickets for Chuck's family since
the raffle drawing was already held at Saturday's tournament.
LOST AND FOUND: egg plate, navy blue XL t-shirt, Timex watch with black band,
sneakers with socks - Court C. These items were left behind after the
tournament. Do you own any of these items? If so, call or email.
Volleyball World's Third Annual King and Queen Tournament
will also dedicate their proceeds to Chuck's family. A t-shirt sale will be
held at that time and t-shirts will be designed for Chuck. Get your
registration form entered soon! It's only 8 weeks away so don't delay. The
three nets fill up quickly.
