Tournament Rules
Note: Current USAVB rules are in effect except as noted. This list is
intended only as a partial list of rules pertaining to the Volleyball World
Tournament. The game referee is the final decision maker on any call.
-
No arguing with the officials!! An abusive attitude with the officials will
result in points awarded to the opposing team. Continued problems will be dealt
with by individual expulsion or forfeiture of games.
-
There can be a maximum of 4 or 6 players on the court at one time. You may
rotate players in or use the substitution procedure but not both.
-
The rotation must be in a clockwise pattern, thus allowing each player to play
at each position. However, positions may be changed after the serve, but prior
to the serve there may be no overlapping of any kind.
-
You may NOT:
-
Touch the net
-
Reach over the net except to block an offensive play
-
Step on or across the back line at the time of service
-
Interfere with opposing players under the net
-
Carry on in any way in an unsportsmanlike manner which will be subject to the
stoppage of play and immediate award of a point
-
The serve may not be blocked or aggressively attacked at the net.
-
A player may touch the ball with any part of the body.
-
A player may have successive contacts with the ball during a single attempt to
make the team’s first contact provided the fingers are not used to direct the
ball.
-
The ball must be contacted cleanly and not held, lifted, pushed, caught,
carried or thrown. The ball cannot roll or come to rest on any part of a
player’s body. It can rebound in any direction.
-
An exception shall be allowed during the defensive play of a hard-driven ball
(an attack-hit or blocked ball traveling at a high rate of speed), as judged by
the referee. In that case, the ball may be momentarily lifted or pushed.
-
A contact of the ball using the fingers (setting action) of one or two hands to
direct the ball toward a teammate is a set. A player may set the ball in
any direction toward his/her team’s court.
-
Rotation (spinning) of a set ball indicates a held ball or multiple contacts
during the set, and is a fault. Final call is the referee’s discretion.
-
Overhand receive on a serve must not be lifted or pushed.
-
When two non-blocking teammates touch the ball simultaneously, it is considered
one contact and any player may make the next contact.
-
A ball coming to rest above the net while in contact by two players of opposing
teams shall be called a “joust” and play shall continue.
-
Back court players may spike at the net as long as they remain on the ground
during the spike and the bottom of the ball is below the tip of the net when
contacted. They may spike while off the ground as long as they start their jump
more than 10 feet back from the net.
-
Back court players may not block at the net. It will be a fault and a point
will be awarded to the opposing team.
-
Pursuit rule is not in effect.
-
There will be no centerline. Outdoor rules will be in effect for player
interference that occurs under the net.
-
Teams and referee must be on the court and ready to play within 10 minutes of
the conclusion of the previous game. Failure of a team to do so will result in
points lost for every minute (or portion of a minute) up to 3 minutes, when
forfeiture occurs. (WARNING TO CAPTAINS: Keep track of court play and work
schedule.)
-
Two, 30 second, time-outs are allowed per game. However, if a team is reduced
to less than 4 players by an injury, not expulsion, the referee shall grant a
special time out of up to 3 minutes per incident. No multiple time outs for the
same injury.
-
Games will be 30 points and a team must hold a 2 point advantage. Cap at 32.
-
Winning team captain is responsible for turning in the score to the scorer’s
table.
-
The team that finishes in 3rd place at each net must referee the first
playoff match at their assigned net. The losing team in the first playoff match
must referee the next playoff match.
-
Ball is out of play when touching trees, power lines, buildings, perimeter
nets, and out house. Ball remains in play after recovery from goat pasture.
-
